In a society where everyone is morphing to a Kardashian/Jenner (no offence to the reality TV family) with their fillers, exaggerated hourglass figures and OTT filters, it’s important to know that beauty is not a one-size-fits all cut

Not only does it come in all sizes, but ages, colours, shapes and forms!

Inclusivity is everything! Take a look at these 5 inspiring fashion models who are changing the way the world defines beauty…

Up-syndrome!

Gucci’s latest star, 18-year-old Ellie Goldstein, is the iconic brand’s first-ever model with Down Syndrome and was scouted as part of their ‘unconventional beauty’ campaign.

Ellie is signed to the Zebedee Management modelling agency, which has a special interest in models with “disabilities and alternative appearances.”

“The response we’ve seen only shows us that the world is ready to embrace diversity and inclusion. And with everything that’s going on, we need to look at things in a more positive light,” Ellie’s mom Yvonne told BBC of her selection.

Age ain’t nothing but a number

Grandmother Kathy Jacobs turned the swimwear fashion industry on it’s head when she became one of the oldest models to grace the highly coveted 2020 Sports Illustrated Swimwear edition.

And the 5,3 foot (1,6m) tall (or should we say short) model is using her new-found fame to fight back against ageism in the industry.

“Beauty has no age limit,” her IG bio proudly states.

Loving the skin she’s in

Jezya Gary was born with a skin condition called lamellar ichthyosis that emulates scales and sheds every 2 weeks.

But that hasn’t stopped her landing a huge swimwear campaign with US retailer Target. She also landed on the digital ‘Self Love’ issue of UK Glamour magazine.

“This is only the beginning and I’m so grateful for this start. I refuse to say “this is crazy” anymore because I know this is meant. This is necessary, ” she said of her new career in modelling.

Dark delight

Nyakim Gatwech totally lives up to her nickname ‘Queen of the dark’. The US-born model of South Sudanese descent is actually listed in the Guinness Book of World Record for having the darkest skin seen on the planet!

In a society where lighter-skinned individuals are given more preference, and the colourism debate rages on, it’s a breath of fresh air to know that beauty is NOT defined by the colour of your skin.

Not-so picture perfect

Gucci Beauty made headlines again with another completely unconventional pick for an ad campaign – Dani Miller’s smile went viral after she was captured in a spread of the brand’s bold lip colours.

With her imperfect and slightly discoloured teeth, the campaign received mixed reviews.

But Dani was not deterred, and we don’t think she should be either.

The model wrote on IG of the campaign: “[It] has felt like a coming out party and a reiteration of feeling comfortable and proud to be myself. A celebration for the beautiful freaks shedding even more of my insecurity’s and doubts, there is space for everyone to be themselves even in the beauty and fashion world

“Hope it inspires everyone especially the youth to love their quirks even more and feel beautiful and powerful with their true self! Hate and exclusion is so washed out.”
