If there’s anybody who knows a thing or two about skin lightening or bleaching, it’s Khanyi Mbau

…after all she’s been doing it for the past 12 years and has the complexion to prove it.

She’s seen her fair share of criticism and dodgy products, but the socialite and businesswoman feels she’s on the right path to ‘glowing and flawless’ skin.

“Good skin is wealth, it’s money”, Khanyi says of her chosen cosmetic path in an IG Live chat she shared online this week.

Nevertheless, Khanyi wants you to know she’s no dermatologist. “I’m not a doctor, I am just telling you from my own experience why I’ve done this”.

In her own words, take a look at Khanyi’s comprehensive guide to safely lightening your skin…

Shield yourself from the sun

When you lighten your skin, it’s even more susceptible to skin damage as the layers have already been eroded by the products.

Remember to protect your skin with a high SPF, claims Khanyi, who applies THREE different sunscreens a day.

Pay special attention to hands, feet, knees, elbows and the back of your heels, says the star. To do this, Khanyi always wears a hat and gloves when driving in her Porsche or BMW and keeps all her ‘problem areas’ covered.

Beware of dangerous ingredients

Products you buy off the black market are trouble and can cause havoc with your health, says the star.

Hydraquinone, monobenzone and mercury are very dangerous, says Khanyi.

“They kill your liver and kill your skin cells and can give you veins”.

Patchy skin, discolouration and permanent skin damage are also some of the side-effects of using products that are not well-developed, she adds.

Khanyi’s skin products of choice – Sparkle Skin – is an ‘organic, all natural range’, which the star claims also has ‘no harmful side-effects’.

Choose a lotion, not a tablet

If you’re looking for a ‘glow’, use glutathione and IV drips. But if you want to be lighter, you need to know the difference in products, says the star.

Whilst skin lightening tablets seem like the logical route, Khanyi warns strongly against them.

“Anything you eat, goes to the digestive system and goes to the gut,” which then passes through your system, says Khanyi.

“The only secret to changing your skin colour is to use a lotion…they stay in your skin and go into your epidermis which stays in your system for a long time”.

Results take time and require a collective effort

In addition to applying a very elaborate skin lightening routine (which includes a body wash, exfoliator, toner, night & day cream and much more), Khanyi also goes for regular IV drips, facials and other aesthetic procedures which add to her ‘glow’.

She also follows the steps outlined below…

What you take you out, you need to put back in!

Skin lighteners dry your skin out, so you need to put the moisture back in, claims Khanyi. “If you are putting anything in which eliminates your melanin, it means you are taking vitamins away from your skin”. To prevent this…

  • Drink A LOT of water – Khanyi drinks at least 8 bottles of water a day
  • Discontinue dairy as it produces mucus that lead to break-outs. You can supplement your dairy with almond….(just not soya because it gives you ‘funky hormones’)
  • Stop the sugar, as it dries out your skin, which leads to skin irritation and break-outs.

Be prepared to pay a lot of money

“Skin lightening is a rich sport”, claims Khanyi of the many, many products she uses.

What you use on the body, you can’t use on the face, which means you have to splurge on separate products that cater specifically for these purposes.

If you want to invest in the best, you have to spend money, claims Khanyi – a starter pack to help your skin glow and lighten ‘two or three shades’, will set you back a pretty penny.

“Every month you are looking at spending upwards of R15 000”, she adds.
