Somizi may not be a professionally trained chef, but despite this, he knows a thing or two about cooking!

The media personality – who recently launched his own cooking show called Dinner At Somizi’s (Friday nights on 1Magic) – has had his fans drooling over his gourmet-Kasi-style dishes on the gram for as long as we can remember.

Finally forging his way into the world of cooking (because he’s literally conquered everything else there is to do!), Somizi’s show is all about sharing a hearty meal & heartwarming conversations with some of SA’s biggest stars, including Siya Kolisi, Cassper Nyovest and Rebecca Malope.

We caught up with Som-gaga, who shared everything you need to know about cooking the perfect meal…

What are your favourite winter recipes to cook?

My favourite winter recipe would be anything that is casseroled. Whether it is chicken, lamb knuckles, lamb shanks or oxtail.

Anything that is cooked for no less than two hours, with love and patience in the oven. That is the best, best meal for winter.

If you could choose anyone to appear on your new show, who would it be and why?

I am very happy with the guests I have had on the show this season. If we move to season two, I would love to invite Papa Penny and Sho Madjozi. Apart from the fact that they are both from Limpopo, there is something about their personalities that I think would make for an interesting episode.

As my international guests, I would like to have Oprah and Beyoncé. I am interested in their work ethic, how they keep their lives private and how they have managed to stay at the top for this long. I would like to ask them a whole lot of questions to discover facts that people do not know about them.

Why do you think fans are loving your dishes posted on Instagram?

I think the fans like the fact that I have made it clear that I am not a chef. I am person who is passionate about cooking and I am authentic and creative.

I bring something that they have not seen before, I think that is what they love about my dishes and my presentation.

What are the 5 essential food items every home cook should have in their cupboard?

For me it is herbs, especially coriander and thyme. You should also not be without olive oil, butter, onions, or garlic.

The one thing every successful dish has in common

The one thing that every successful dish has in common is flavour, flavour, flavour.

What is the worst mistake you’ve made in the kitchen?

The worst mistake I have made in the kitchen was and still is to over-season to the point that it becomes too salty and I can’t save it!

Be careful when you use spices and stock to not just add salt, rather taste, taste, taste.

What kitchen appliance you can’t cook without?

I cannot cook without my ceramic pots. They are the best, I cannot use anything else!

What is your favourite meal and what do you love about it?

My favourite meal is oxtail stew with dumplings. My late brother-in-law, Thembinkosi made it for me in Swaziland the first time.

Since then, my goodness! He cooked it outside in a “drie-been -potjie”. My goodness! Lord have mercy.
