Did you know that your taste in music can affect your sex life?
Music, art, and romance are intricately intertwined. Love is the central theme in millions of plays, movies, songs, and poems. Unrequited love, passionate love, love lost, and enduring love are all a part of the human experience. And when it comes to passion, music and its rhythms have a role to play too.
Researchers have found that songs with a certain number of beats per minute are preferred by couples who listen to music in the bedroom. The researchers also found that music taste plays a role in how often couples have sex.
“Couples who have similar taste in music generally have more sex than those with differing opinions,” according to a study by Dennis Relojo-Howell, founder of psychology website Psychreg…
Relojo-Howell teamed up with Supplement Place to investigate why music helps us get ‘in the mood’.
Rhythm is important
The study found that the rhythm of the song is important, as well as a couple’s taste in music.
‘Listening to music has the same reward pathways as food, drugs, and sexual pleasure,” says Relojo-Howell. “Music causes our brain to experience a stream of dopamine, the pleasure hormone.”
Research also suggests that certain types of music can evoke both positive and negative emotions. “For instance, rapid rhythms are known to excite the senses.”
The researchers identified couples’ top sexy songs and artists, and also analysed the average beats per minute across all these songs.
Across the original 60,000 songs, the average BPM was 119, which is around the same speed as Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ and ‘Just Dance’, as well as Journey’s, ‘Don’t Stop Believing’.
When researchers looked at the top 20, the average BPM is slightly lower at 110. This is roughly the same speed as Queen’s ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ and The Spice Girl’s ‘Wannabe’.
Analysis of popular songs
Supplement Place analysed 413 of Spotify’s steamiest playlists (60,000 songs) to reveal which saucy songs and artists appear most often.
The Weeknd is the most popular artist with 1,447 appearances across all 413 playlists.
The Weeknd’s “Earned It” was released as the lead single from the soundtrack to the 2015 film Fifty Shades of Grey which may also contribute towards its popularity in the bedroom.
