The South African Weather Service has issued a number of warnings for the week ahead, as winter grips the county…

From gale-force winds to heavy rains, possible flooding and a chance of snow, South Africans have been warned to prepare for adverse conditions leading into the weekend.

  • Strong to gale north-westerly winds (60-75km/h) are expected in places over the Northern Cape and Western Cape on Thursday.
  • Strong to gale north-westerly winds (60-75km/h) between Cape Columbine and Cape Agulhas of the Western Cape Thursday spreading to Plettenberg Bay by the evening.
  • High seas with wave heights from 6 to 8m are expected between Hondeklip Bay and Cape Agulhas Thursday.
  • Heavy rain is expected over the high lying areas of the Cape Metropole and Cape Winelands Thursday evening and Friday.
  • A heavy rain leading to localised flooding is possible over the Cape Metropole, mountainous areas of Cape Winelands and Overberg from Friday until Saturday.
  • Very cold conditions are expected over Western Cape and the southern high ground of the Northern Cape on Friday afternoon spreading eastwards by Saturday morning.
  • Snowfalls are expected over the mountainous regions of the Western Cape and the southern high ground of the Northern Cape on Friday.

1. Gauteng:

Fine and cool.

2. Mpumalanga:

Fine and cool but warm in the Lowveld.

3. Limpopo:

Fine and warm.

4. North-West Province:

Fine and cool to warm.

5. Free State:

Fine and cool.

6. Northern Cape:

Cloudy and cool becoming fine in the afternoon but warm over the west coast and in the north.

The wind along the coast will be light and variable becoming moderate south-easterly to easterly by the afternoon.

7. Western Cape:

Cloudy to partly cloudy and cool with morning rain and isolated showers becoming fine over the western parts by the afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be moderate southerly to south-easterly along the west coast otherwise moderate westerly to south-westerly along the south coast.

The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate

8. Western Half Of The Eastern Cape:

Cloudy and cold but cool along the coast with isolated showers in the along the coast and adjacent interior.

The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south westerly.

9. Eastern Half Of The Eastern Cape:

Fine and cool becoming partly cloudy to cloudy by afternoon.

The wind along the coast will be fresh to strong south westerly.

10. Kwazulu-Natal:

Fine and cool but warm in the north. It will become partly cloudy from the east in the afternoon with evening rain and isolated showers along the coast and adjacent interior.

The wind along the coast will be moderate to fresh north easterly becoming fresh to strong south westerly from the south by late morning and spreading to the north by afternoon The expected UVB sunburn index: Moderate
