A pregnant woman was found dead in her bathroom on a farm in Weenen, in KwaZulu Natal on Saturday, according to a report in the Ladysmith Gazette.
Her throat had allegedly been slit by three unknown suspects who attacked the homestead on the weekend.
According to the police, the suspects entered the property on Saturday night at around 7pm and demanded cash. The woman and her husband were separated, and the kids were taken into one of the rooms. The husband and the suspects fought, and the wife was taken into the bathroom.
Her body was discovered after the suspects had fled the scene. According to unconfirmed reports on social media, the husband was badly injured and hospitalised.
Police are investigating a case of murder.
DA wants farm murders declared a hate crime
The attack comes shortly after DA MP Dianne Kohler Barnard requested a parliamentary debate on “the scourge of farm attacks and murders across the country.”
“There has been a significant upsurge in the number of reported incidents of farm attacks since the start of the lockdown. These attacks have been particularly heinous in nature, with brutal torture being commonplace in rural attacks,” said Barnard.
The party wants farm murders to be re-categorised as hate crimes.
