As of Sunday, the number of confirmed coronavirus (Covid-19) cases in South Africa was 196 750, according to Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize

The minister said 8 773 new cases had been identified, with 173 more deaths. This brought the total number of deaths to 3 199.

In his Monday letter to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa reminded citizens to take care of the elderly, and those most vulnerable to infection.

“While the COVID-19 fatality rate is low in South Africa compared to the rest of the world, the rising number of infections is a caution against complacency,” wrote the President.

“People with underlying medical conditions like diabetes and hypertension should be extra cautious. They should observe social distancing, stay home if possible and stay away from crowded places. Like everyone else, they should practice good hygiene and continue to take their medication.”
