South Africa edges closer to the one million mark for tests conducted, but the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 has now risen to 52 991

According to a statement by Minister of Health Zweli Mkhize, a further 2 112 confirmed cases were reported on Tuesday.

In terms of testing, 968 070 tests have been conducted to date, with 25 012 tests performed in the last 24 hours.

Of the tests conducted, 48% have been in private facilities and 52% in public laboratories.

Covid-19 related deaths

After the Covid-19 death toll breached the 1 000 mark on Monday, a further 82 deaths were reported on Tuesday evening, taking the total to 1 162, which translated to a mortality rate of 2,2%.

“Regrettably, we report a further 82 Covid-19 related deaths: 61 from Western Cape, 11 from the Eastern Cape, and 10 from Gauteng province,” Mkhize said.

“We extend our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased.”

Meanwhile, as of 9 June, a total of 29 006 recoveries have been recorded.

Of the deaths recorded as of 9 June, 52.,% were men and 47,8% were women.

The majority of the deaths were recorded in the age bracket of 50–79, accounting for 70,1%.
