Whether you love or hate soup season, it’s approaching fast. Gradually adjusting your skincare routine is a great way to ensure you get it right this winter…

1. Start upping the moisture

Not exactly a groundbreaking first step, but it’s the most important one. Multiple factors contribute to the perfect storm to create dry skin in winter. If you’re not in a daily body lotion routine, get into it right away so it’s easier when it’s freezing in a month’s time. As for your facial care, ensure you have a hydrating serum slotted in and remember that the next moisturiser you buy should be slightly richer than your current one if you live in a dry climate.

2. Mind your water temperature

I’ve already gradually been increasing the shower temperature every couple of days, so I know I need to be much quicker in there. I’m supposed to tell you to keep bath and shower water warm, not hot – but I’m not a monster. If you like a hot bath, ensure you have some oils in there and limit the time and number of baths you take if showering is an option. Same for showering – if you know you like the water hot, make it quick and don’t skimp on moisturiser afterwards.

3. Up the scrub

If dry skin becomes coarse and uneven to the touch it means your cell turnover is not keeping up, I.e. there are too many dead, dry skin cells that have accumulated on the surface. If your skin tends to look ashy or feel coarse or bumpy in winter, you likely need to exfoliate more. A sugar/salt scrub in an oil base is great for your body, while an enzyme or AHA exfoliant is my preference for the face and neck.

4. It’s time to treat

Due to weaker UV rays and less exposure in general, winter is the best time for a course of active treatment products. Potent products intended to treat scarring, pigmentation and sometimes acne are often safer and more effective to use in winter.

5. Keep using SPF

When you use a high factor SPF, your body does not have to create and distribute cells specifically to protect your skin against UV damage. While you’re covering that aspect, skin cells can be generated for more beneficial functions like regeneration and repair.
