CAPE TOWN, May 21 (ANA) – Western Cape Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz on Thursday has commended the young policeman who has shown his commitment to serving his community by delivering food parcels, out of his own pocket, to five families in need in Kraaifontein.
Many people across South Africa have lost their income due to the Covid-19 nationwide lockdown, leaving families struggling to put food on the table, especially in poor neighbourhoods.
The 23-year-old Constable Kwayo Louw, who is based at Pinelands SAPS, has reached out to fellow community members in need in Kraaifontein on the Kraailove WhatsApp group to nominate needy families and they have responded.
Commended for his contribution to the community
“I commend Constable Louw on his exemplary contribution to his community. He showcases that the role of a police officer is not simply enforcement but also to look out for those most vulnerable and play a part in addressing socio-economic challenges,” Fritz said.
“It is important that each of us, including our police service, continues showing compassion during these difficult times. Currently, under alert level 4 of the lockdown, the movement of many remains restricted, which means that their ability to earn an income is limited too,” he said.
Keeping communities safe
Fritz has commended the many police and law enforcement officers, who are serving on the front line during “difficult times”.
“Our officers are simultaneously working under the pressures presented by the Covid-19 lockdown and trying to stay safe. Despite this, they show up and keep our communities safe. Many go above and beyond their call of duty to help those most vulnerable, such as Constable Louw.”
South Africa is currently under a level 4 Covid-19 lockdown, imposed by the government in an effort to curb the spread of the virus. Level 4 restrictions came into effect on 1 May and followed an extended five-week total shutdown announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa at the end of March.
