London (dpa) – A 100-year-old former British soldier who raised millions of pounds to help Britain’s health service through the novel coronavirus pandemic said he was “overawed” to learn that he will be knighted.
“I am overawed by the fact that this has happened to me,” ex-army captain Tom Moore said on Wednesday.
His official title is now Captain Sir Tom Moore.
Affectionately known as Captain Tom, he has raised more than 33 million pounds (40 million dollars) through the charity JustGiving fund for National Health Service (NHS).
“I’d like to thank her majesty the queen, the prime minister and the Great British public. I will remain at your service,” he added.
Speaking to BBC television on receiving news of his knighthood he said: “I thought: ‘This can’t be true.'”
The World War II veteran set out to raise 1,000 pounds by walking 100 25-metre lengths of his garden over several days, supported by his walking frame, before his 100th birthday on April 30.
Sir Tom provided the British with “a beacon of light through the fog of coronavirus,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.
An investiture ceremony will be held at a later date.
