The Little Things That Make a Big Difference’ is an article series outlining weight loss and diet interventions that may seem insignificant, but can make a huge difference to the success of your diet plan.

Posture is one of those things that teachers usually go on and on about in junior school! Or it’s something our parents moan about at the dinner table… “Sit up straight!”

Most of us don’t take it very seriously, or understand why sitting up straight is good for us. Here’s why you should be more conscious of your posture.

Good posture is pretty important – and not just because it makes you look more confident in meetings. You see, having a slouch means that your spine is more compressed than it should be, which could lead to back ache and back pain in your later years.

A compressed spine means that your lungs and organs have far less space in which to operate, meaning that they have to work far harder to do their jobs, too.

This can lead to digestion difficulties, breathing difficulties, and trouble with keeping your bowel movements regular. We all know that good digestion is a big part of a healthy diet, and one of the keys to losing weight effectively. Good digestion means that your body is absorbing all the right things and getting rid of the excess. You do not want food sitting around in your stomach and causing gas and constipation issues.

You really want to sit up straight now, right?

The easiest way?

Practice by imagining someone pulling up on a string that’s tied to the top of your head. Once you get comfortable with it, it’ll be easier. You just need to make the effort at the beginning. But it’s worth it in the long run. I promise.
