Use your Level 4 exercise time wisely!

After five long weeks of not being allowed to go outside to exercise, we can now take to the streets (within 5km from our homes) and get some mileage in again between six and nine every morning…

If you’re a runner, that’s wonderful as you can run loops that are longer than the perimeter of your back garden. Cyclists can also train for the first time in ages, although in frustratingly small areas.

The people who are still a little frustrated are the ones who attend gyms where they use specific equipment (often too expensive for home purchase) to train. The gyms are closed, and they may not open again for a while.

No matter what kind of ‘exerciser’ you are, I’d like to make an appeal:

Be responsible.

Don’t go out in a huge bunch of cyclists and ride 50km from home. Don’t head down to the local beach and run when there are already hundreds of other people there. Don’t complain about the rules, even though you may not like them.

Our government has made decisions about coming out of lockdown into Level 4. Let’s support them as best we can, by obeying the rules and trying to stay safe. The last thing we need is for thousands more people to get sick because they thought exercise was more important than anything else.

Use your new-found freedom, but use it thoughtfully and responsibly. Try not to take advantage of it, and you may find it’ll grow. And that’s what we all want.
