Former Yizo Yizo star Dumisani Dlamini is defending himself against “absentee dad” claims after his daughter Doja Cat revealed that she had never met him
Doja Cat is enjoying worldwide fame thanks to hit singles like Say So and Boss B*tch.
She has performed on American shows such as The Late Night Show With Seth Meyers – where she met Whoopi Goldberg backstage.
The 24-year-old told Whoopi that her dad starred alongside her in the critically acclaimed musical drama, Sarafina! – which was released in 1992.
During their chat, Doja Cat mentioned that she still has not met her father.
“I didn’t get to meet him, but you did and damnit but that’s so cool,” she said.
A video of their backstage meeting went viral in SA this week and many people were disappointed that Dumisani has not been in his daughter’s life.
Many described him as a “classic deadbeat dad”.
“Are ya’ll telling me that Dumisani did not introduce Doja Cat to her ancestors as per the requirements of the Zulu tradition?” one Twitter user asked.
Another user added: “I’m just thinking of Dumisani’s kids learning on the internet that their half-sister is Doja Cat.”
Dumisani decided to set the record straight about their relationship during an interview with Metro FM
“I have tried to search for my baby and the company that runs her entertainment has been blocking me. They know that if I could get hold of her, maybe she will disappear from the picture.”
He added that he knows his daughter and “wherever she is, is looking for me.”
Doja Cat has mentioned in previous interviews that she reached out to her father as a teenager and is open to reconnecting with him.
During his interview with Metro FM, Dumisani downplayed some of the comments Doja Cat made when she met Whoopi.
“She got hold of me. We spoke. We connected. Now, at this time when she is there and on top, she has to grab the whole world, especially in SA because she is a South African and her daddy is here. It’s a made-up thing”.
Dumisani and Doja Cat’s Jewish-American mother, Deborah Elizabeth Sawyer, met when he was living in the US after taking part in the Sarafina! tour.
