With more and more people working from home and schools being cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, we are forced to practise self-isolation by staying indoors
This might lead to us asking ourselves: What can I do from home?
Here is a list of some activities you can do that are either fun or productive and, most importantly, safe during this unprecedented time:
Enjoy 5-star meals at home
With social distancing and self-quarantines becoming the COVID-19 norm, why not dine at home like you’re in a 5-star restaurant? YouTube has hundreds of cooking tutorials with step-by-step guides on how to prepare your favourite dishes at home. (Now is also the time to teach the children to cook something a little more complicated than popcorn.)
Alternatively, if you’re in Cape Town, you could just order some restaurant-standard food from Gia’s Kitchen who deliver delicious home-style meals right at your doorstep. Either way, you don’t have to stress about leaving the safety of your home.
Get some fresh air… and the kids off the couch
Simple outdoor activities like hiking are no-brainers when it comes to healthy and coronavirus-safe fun, whether solo or with some family and friends. A spot like Cape Point is considered a hiker’s paradise, as there are a number of beautiful and manageable short walks throughout the park – and there are huge open spaces so no need to worry about being too close to other people.
Each trail serves up a selection of panoramic ocean and mountain views and gives access to unspoilt beaches.
Collate and digitize your family pictures
Saving images and videos to an external hard drive from your phone is always a great idea – whether it’s a bunch of your favourite selfies or a funny video you took of your dog. Use this time to collate all the loving memories you and the kids have captured on your phones. You never know when you might need them.
Try a new exercise routine at home
Now that the gym has been declared a high-risk area to contract the coronavirus, why not put together your own in-home gym routine? Not only will you be making some gains and keeping fit but you’ll also be saving some cash which would otherwise have gone on gym fees.
Spring clean your home
Why not use your self-quarantine time productively? Pick up a broom and start sweeping from top to bottom. You can also rearrange your cupboard and finally clear out the store room with all the old junk. Put on some music while doing these things and you might find yourself enjoying every moment of it.
Who knows: the teenagers might even help once they get REALLY bored (and their phones are on charge)…
