The Little Things That Make a Big Difference’ is an article series outlining weight loss and diet interventions that may seem insignificant, but can make a huge difference to the success of your diet plan.

Are you allergic?

The American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI), “An allergy is a chronic condition involving an abnormal reaction to an ordinarily harmless substance called an allergen. Allergens can  include aeroallergens such as dust mite, mold, and tree weed and grass pollen, as well as food allergens such as milk, egg, soy, wheat, nut or fish proteins.”

If you feel constantly bloated, have irregular bowel movements, or an unexplained skin condition, you may actually be suffering from an undiagnosed food allergy.

So do you have an allergy that you don’t know about?

If you feel bloated, or get an upset tummy every time you drink milk, eat an ice-cream, indulge in a milkshake, or enjoy a cheese platter, then it might be time to consider that you have a cow’s milk allergy, or at least an intolerance to it.

How to tell: Exclude cow’s milk from your diet for two weeks or so and see what happens. Be STRICT with yourself. Don’t have a little nibble here and there. Make sure that it’s something you completely exclude so that you can see if that is what is causing your body’s adverse reaction.

If you start feeling less bloated and your bowel becomes more regular, then you should consider avoiding cow’s milk in the future.

Don’t exclude everything at once!

If you suspect you have an allergy, but you don’t know if it’s to wheat, dairy or gluten, then don’t exclude them all from your diet at once. You won’t be able to tell which one was causing the issues.

Exclude one thing at a time for a period of 2 weeks until you’ve pinpointed the culprit.

Do allergies affect your ability to lose weight

The bottom line is YES. Your body needs to be working optimally in order for it to focus on weight loss. If it’s ‘distracted’ by constantly having to deal with allergies, your weight loss will suffer. You’ll also probably feel bloated and lethargic.

So you really do want to sort it out. Once you do, if your diet is good, you’ll begin to feel better and lose weight immediately, and that will make you very, very happy.

Give it a shot.
