We know that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is healthy, but now a new study suggests that it may also help to lessen various menopausal symptoms.

Although hormone therapy can help treat menopause-related symptoms, there is an ongoing search for natural (non-pharmacologic) treatments and lifestyle changes that might prevent or alleviate menopausal symptoms.

Previous studies suggest that diet may affect oestrogen production, metabolism, and menopausal symptoms. In particular, a Mediterranean-style diet, characterised by a high content of vegetables, fruits, cereals, and nuts, was linked to fewer menopausal symptoms and complaints.

This new study found that, while many fruits and vegetables helped alleviated or reduce menopausal symptoms, others appeared to be associated with more urogenital problems.

According to Colorado Woman’s Health at the University of Colorado, urogenital symptoms may include the need to urinate more frequently, incontinence, dryness and itching in the vagina and increased urinary tract infections.

Citrus fruits, for example, were called out as having an adverse effect on urogenital scores compared with other types of fruits, as were green leafy or dark yellow vegetables compared with other vegetables.
