You’ve seen the TV ad for arriving happy in the all-new Kia Seltos since it went on sale in SA in November last year. Now you get to read about what you’ll get for your money when you buy one

As a motorist on our country’s roads, you know that potholes, stray animals and erratic drivers have to be dodged on a regular basis, and that decent ground clearance and great visibility are an important factor when choosing a new car.

If you have children you want the safest car you can afford to transport your precious cargo, and if you’re a road tripper, then you need space for luggage too.

Just a few of the reasons why South Africans have been choosing SUVs as their vehicle of choice.

If you think SUVs packed with luxury and safety features are out of your price range, then you’re going to be excited about the arrival of the Seltos

Prices are disruptive and this compact SUV is one of the most spacious and feature-packed among its rivals – with a warranty and service plan to leave the others in the dust!

All4Women was at the press launch in the gorgeous Cape Winelands last week, and got behind the wheels of two of the Kia Seltos models – the 1.6 EX Automatic and the range topper 1.4 T-GDi GT-Line. Both models offered a really smooth drive and superior road holding (tested on some mildly alarming cliffside hairpin bends on the scenic coastal road between Betty’s Bay and Gordon’s Bay).

The 1.6 EX is really high-specced for an SUV that is priced just above the R350 000 mark, and the list of features that are standard across all models are really impressive.

So many exciting features – like a reverse camera standard on all models

The KIA Seltos offers styling, features and tech to match some of the bigger (and more expensive) brands in the market

For example, all models are equipped with LED daytime running lights at the front, as well as front fog lamps across the range. On the higher spec models, fog lamps, headlights and indicators are full LED.

Every Seltos also comes equipped with six airbags as standard. ISOFIX child seat anchors, ABS brakes, and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), as well as rear park distance control sensors and a reverse camera with dynamic guidelines, integrated into the vehicle’s touchscreen infotainment system.

EX+ and GT-Line models are also equipped with Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Hill-start Assist Control (HAC).

Sporty and sophisticated exterior

The KIA Seltos offers a sporty exterior design and the space and capabilities of a traditional SUV – all in a compact package. At 4,315 mm long, 1 800 mm wide and 1 620mm high, it’s one of the largest and most practical compact SUVs available today.

7 Exciting colours to choose from: you’ll love the two-tone options too

Customers can choose from seven exterior colours, including Glacier White Pearl, Steel Silver, Gravity Grey, Aurora Black Pearl, Intelligency Blue, Intense Red and Punchy Orange, the latter only available as a special order.

In addition, the all-new KIA Seltos is also available with three two-tone colour options: Glacier White Pearl with a black roof, (my favourite) Intense Red with a black roof, and Punchy Orange with a white roof, the latter also only available on special order.

Exceptional value from all three options available in SA

The all-new KIA Seltos will be offered with three specification grades, as well as a choice of three engines and three transmissions.

The EX is the entry point model, but comes with an impressive array of standard features that include air-conditioning (manual), automatic headlight control (including an ‘escort’ and ‘welcome home’ function), electrically adjustable side mirrors with integrated indicators, steering wheel-mounted remote controls, electric windows, cruise control, and an 8-inch colour touchscreen infotainment system that incorporates a radio with RDS, linked to six speakers.

Seltos is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphone mirroring, as well as Bluetooth connectivity with voice recognition, and has charging USB ports for front and rear passengers.

A full-sized spare wheel and 16-inch alloy wheels are also standard.

Power is courtesy of a 1.6-litre Multi-point Injection (MPI) engine. and customers have a choice between a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The mid-spec KIA Seltos EX+ is also available with the 90 kW 1.6 petrol engine, but is only available with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Apart from the extensive features already included in the Seltos EX, the EX+ specification also includes an upgrade from cloth upholstery to leather, while the electrically adjustable side mirrors gain an auto-folding function. Front passengers also get a centre console armrest with an integrated storage box, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels with 215/60R17 tyres (also with a full-sized spare wheel).

At the top of the range, the Seltos GT Line offers a number of exclusive features

The Seltos GT Line adds sporty satin chrome and red trim, with gloss black and satin chrome detailing on the front grille, as well as bespoke, 17-inch crystal cut alloy wheels with red brake callipers. All exterior lights are upgraded to full LED units, with unique 3D layered indicators at the front.

On the inside, there’s bespoke GT-Line leather upholstery with matching embroidery, as well as a sporty D-shape steering wheel and stainless-steel pedals. In addition, Seltos GT-Line also debuts a new version of KIA’s Drive Mode Select system, incorporating a 2WD Terrain Mode.

Drive Mode Select allows drivers to adapt the car to their preferred style or the road conditions, with a choice between ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’ and ‘Sport’ mode

2WD Terrain Mode also offers three modes (‘Snow’, ‘Mud’ and ‘Sand’), each designed to tailor power and torque to ensure maximum traction on slippery or sandy roads. All modes are accessed via a single dial located above the gear shifter.

The KIA Seltos GT-Line also debuts a brand new 1,4-litre T-GDI (turbocharged gasoline direct injection) engine, exclusively paired with a new-generation 7-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) which not only aids fuel efficiency, but also acceleration.

As with all KIA models, you get their industry-leading unlimited kilometre, 5-year warranty (inclusive of roadside assistance), and a 5-year/90,000km Service Plan.

A 1,5-litre diesel engine is set to join the Seltos line-up later this year, also available with a choice of 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. Pricing will be announced closer to the local introduction.
