Loyiso Gijana, who was a Top 5 contestant on SA Idols back in 2015, has opened up about his struggle against depression and anxiety in a series of honest social media posts
On the surface, things appeared to be going extremely well for the 20-year-old. Four years after nearly winning Idols (at the time he was 16!), it looked as if he had the world at his feet and was ready to conquer the entertainment industry. However, fast forward to 2020 and Loyiso reveals that, beneath the surface, all is not well.
At a time when conversations about mental illness are being normalised across the country, more and more celebrities are taking a moment to address their ailments. In the past three years we have seen a number of A-listers, including Gigi Lamayne, Slikour and even another Idols personality, Unathi, opening up about suffering from depression.
This week, Loyiso took the first step towards healing when he opened up about his battle
The singer took to social media to share a concerning thread of messages which he began by saying, “I’ve honestly been in the darkest of places emotionally and no matter what happens in my life, I keep being shifted back into that place. The worst thing about it is that I’m a very emotional person, so I feel so much that a lot of other people don’t.”
This tweet immediately raised alarm bells and just as fans quickly jumped to support him, Loyiso continued, “I could try and explain to someone or have my friends and family surrounding me it doesn’t help. This problem is so deep rooted inside of me. I’ve been so clueless as to what I need to do and praying feels like it’s a waste of words at this point”.
While he acknowledges his emotional and mental distress, he admitted that he doesn’t know the answer to his problem.
