The news that the SABC 3 soapie Isidingo: The Need would come to an end this year shocked the nation; including the show’s own actors who found out via social media!
Imagine learning that you’re no longer going to have a job through a series of tweets on social media.
That’s exactly what went down in the latter months of 2019 when it became increasingly apparent that Isidingo didn’t have a future.
We first learned the news in November 2019 when a Sunday World story revealed that the popular soapie would receive the axe due to low ratings:

While there was no official announcement, many thought that the actors had already been informed of the SABC’s decision to cancel the long-running soapie. However, this was far from the truth.
Over the course of the past weekend, new details emerged suggesting that the show’s cast members heard the news along with the rest of the country. There were no warnings or whispers behind the scenes until the news was leaked to the public.
One of the actors, Motlatsi Mafatshe, spoke to Metro FM: “They could have done it gracefully. The majority of people, the actors, found out on Twitter. That is so distasteful. When a blogger founds out first that a show is going to be canned.
“For a show that has been there for 21 years, you would want to celebrate the artists. It leaves a bad taste that maybe the performers or the people who work there aren’t good enough.”
The SABC has yet to respond to his latest remarks but fans on social media sympathised with Motlatsi’s testimony
