Her life’s story is described as a modern day fairy-tale. From the small town of Piet Retief to the international opera stage, Pretty Yende has put SA on the map again…

And now, her fairy-tale includes a knighthood!

According to her bio, Yende has risen to the top of the opera world with unparalleled speed. Yende’s debut album celebrates the milestones of her sublime musical journey; starting at the age of 16, when she first got into touch with Opera by hearing Delibes’ Flower Duet on a television advertisement to her debut at La Scala and her international breakthrough at New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

In 2016, she released her debut album “A Journey” for Sony Classical, and appeared as the musical guest on several television shows including “The Late Show” with Steven Colbert, “The Wendy Williams Show,” and “Good Morning America.”

She released her second solo album titled “Dreams” one year later on Sony Classical, with rave reviews from Opera Now stating: “South African Yende has a delicious instrument, with a youthful quiver of passion to it, and a wonderfully secure technique.”

Knighthood

This week, Yende was awarded The Order/Knight of the Star of Italy, (The Ordine Stella d’Italia) which was presented to her by the Italian consul in Cape Town.

She posted a photograph and a message on social media, saying she was truly humbled by the award. In a moving tribute, she dedicated all of her achievements to her mom, Rose, and her sister, Nombulelo who is also a talented singer:

“I’m able to be and aspire to become what my heart desires to be on this earth in this short time of my life because of many wonderful human beings I’ve got to know and meet in my #prettyjourney. But these ladies standing beside me are my very wings that allow me to fly to the impossible. Strong women who never cease to give me unconditional love and always reminding me that we are all just walking each other home. Each experience and memory is what we truly carry with us in the end. Advising me to seek progress rather than perfection, and that if anything, being and walking in my path, I can never be denied. My dear sister and extraordinary talented singer @nombulelo_yende and our precious Rose. I AM MY MOTHER’S PRAYERS.”
