If you want to live a longer and healthier life with your children, be active together

Most parents tend to place their needs second to the needs of their children. Even those that were committed to keeping active find it difficult to remain consistent once they become parents. Whether it’s restlessness from a newborn to driving your children to swimming or piano lessons, it’s always hard to keep up.

The good news is, you do not have to do it alone. Here are five easy ways that parents can keep active with their children:

1. Join your kids in their extra-mural sports

Instead of just dropping your children off for soccer practice, join them and get involved. Volunteer at their sports club. Not only will this keep parents active, it also provides them with the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the company that their children keep and the school staff.

2. Incorporate exercise in daily activities

There is no denying that staying fit and active is one of the toughest things to commit to, especially for parents. Many parents may find themselves making a vow to get up early the next morning for the gym but change their mind as soon as the alarm wails an hour earlier than normal and after work would prefer to relax over a glass of wine or catching up on television. The answer is to incorporate exercise in their daily routines, skip the lifts in the offices and opt for stairs.

3. Avoid using the car as much as possible

A workout does not have to take an hour. If you live close to a mall and have errands to run and groceries to pick, rather opt for a walk – this will also give you time to bond as a family.

4. Include exercise in play dates

Finding a fun activity to keep your child happy and active requires a little imagination. Set up play dates around physical activities that will accommodate all ages e.g, build and fly a kite together as a family, treasure-hunt game.

5. Get a pet

Walking is one of the best ways to keep adults active. Walking a dog may motivate adults to walk often and walks are more enjoyable with a four-legged furry friend. Pet owners often walk longer and have a regular schedule. Owning a pet has been proven to have great health benefits – the amount of exercise can increase significantly when you own a dog. While it can be difficult to stay motivated to stay fit especially by yourself, taking your dog for routine walks and playing games counts as exercise.

Spur’s latest commercial light-heartedly nudges us to take being active more seriously

Spur Steak Ranches, Ninety9cents (99c) and Hungry Films, have come together to produce a story that reminds us that, even as we age, participating in sports and being active is still important. This sentiment is brought to life using children in various grown-up settings (such as behind a car steering wheel), reiterating the myriad excuses that adults use to avoid getting active.

“The benefits of leading an active lifestyle are self-evident but we sometimes don’t give it the priority it deserves. This is a light-hearted story about taking the lead from kids; sometimes we just need to play!,” says Sacha du Plessis, Group Head of Marketing at Spur Corporation.
