Washington (dpa) – US First lady Melania Trump lit the National Christmas Tree in Washington on Thursday, with her husband President Donald Trump by her side for the occasion…

Trump extended festive greetings at the ceremony in the Ellipse park, between the White House and the Washington Monument.

This year’s tree is more than nine-metre-tall Colorado blue spruce from Pennsylvania, the National Park Service said.

It was brought over in October and re-planted using a crane, with horticulturalists keeping a close eye on its health after the move.

The tradition of the national tree goes back almost a century. The first was lit by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923.

But organisers have made efforts to modernise the annual event – since 2013, the tree has even had its own Twitter account, where a tweet was sent Thursday night with a message to fans: “Thank you to everyone who came to see me tonight!”
