Moonchild Sanelly had a brush with death after being diagnosed with malaria following a trip to visit Malawi

She was in the south-east African country in September for the Lake of Stars festival and unknowingly contracted the life-threatening disease.

According to SowetanLIVE, the musician was on medical rest the whole of November as a result.

Moonchild reportedly spend four days in hospital to combat the debilitating symptoms.

She learned that she had malaria long after she visited Malawi. In fact, she travelled to Austria and the USA without knowing she had it.

“It was scary. I remember telling myself that there is no way this is going to come out and [have people] say, ‘rest in peace Moonchild’. I was in and out of consciousness. I was so weak and we initially thought it was just jet lag. So, I was travelling and didn’t know that I had malaria in my system,” she told the publication.

Thankfully, it was caught just in time

Moonchild had to miss a few shows as a result of her illness. She hinted at her condition in an Instagram post in October.

“My habitual state of being is to survive on a fire to keep going but the human body needs more balance than that. I have had to miss appointments and shows in the past week, due to medical reasons as the result of my travels. I have excused myself from organisers but haven’t shown my Moonbeams the same consideration and love,” she wrote.

The singer also thanked her fans for their well wishes.

“Although I am no longer in hospital, I am under strict doctor’s orders to stay medicated and rested for a full recovery until further notice so that we can touch the sky together again. Thank you for the well wishes and support! – Love, Moonchild Sanelly.”
