Dodging expensive restaurant bills shouldn’t mean a missing out on a beautiful dining experience. Set the scene for a meal at home with an Insta worthy table setting.

Entertaining at home means you get to see more of your loved ones at the same time. Make the day (or night) more special than just another family dinner by setting the table, and create a hotel-standard experience for your guests.

Skip the pretence

There is a wrong way and a right way to layout your cutlery. There is a spoon for your soup and a knife just for the fish. All of that etiquette may be important while dining at Buckingham Palace, but the most important things for your guests is comfort.

Making sure you have clean, matching cutlery when your guests need it, where they need is your priority. It makes for less of a hassle and allows your conversations to flow through dinner, without being disturbed by the grunting of someone butchering steak with a butter knife.

Keep an assortment of crockery as part of your table setting without the pretence of a formal table setting. Putting a full set of crockery in a glass or cutlery holder at every place setting makes this easy and can fit seamlessly into your table setting.

Use what you have to decorate your table

The energy spent on over-the-top centrepieces isn’t worth the little attention they get. Centrepieces are often pushed aside to make room at the table or just so your guests can see each other. Keep it simple with short vases and even bowls of fruit.

The latest trend is to keep nibbles in decorative bird cages. Piles of books can also be an interesting part of the theme of your table.

Be innovative and make it interesting; if it doesn’t start a conversation at your table, it might start one on Instagram or Pinterest.

The bare necessities

You don’t want to clutter your table with odds and ends, but you do want to make sure your guests are comfortable and have what they need. Make sure people aren’t worried about ruining your furniture by providing the bare necessities like coasters and table mats if you aren’t using a table cloth.

Integrating these simple things into your table setting may feel boring, but it’s one task you won’t regret, especially after your guests have left.
