JOHANNESBURG, November 19 (ANA) – Pick n Pay on Tuesday announced that it will make eating healthier more accessible for its customers through launching nearly 500 new products by January 2020…

The retailer will launch its Livewell range to include easy-to-read labels for smarter, healthier food choices.

It has also stated that the new partnership with Kauai was propelled by shocking statistics that have revealed that South Africa has been named one of the unhealthiest countries in the world and that healthy eating is often seen as expensive or complicated.

“At a glance, customers can easily identify a product’s health benefits and know exactly what they’re buying for themselves and their families,” head of Innovation and Trends at Pick n Pay Nicki Russell said.

“The PnP Livewell products meet strict criteria based on government guidelines for fat, saturated fat, added sugar and salt. We’ve worked really hard to make our products healthier in line with these guidelines. For example, last year we cut 240 tonnes of salt (calculated as grams reduction per product sold) from our own brand range.”

150 new products before the end of January 2020

Russel said the 150 new products would be launched before the end of January 2020 to complement the more than 330 PnP Livewell products already on shelf, ranging from fresh and pantry items to frozen options.

“The PnP Livewell range is ideal for customers looking for a healthier alternative or who might have a health condition that restricts the intake of certain foods or ingredients. New labelling will also help customers quickly identify low carb and Free From (Gluten and Lactose) items, as well as vegetarian or vegan options,” he said.

“Our clear Livewell labelling leaves no room for confusion. We have also created pocket-size Livewell educational booklets that are really convenient for our customers and are available in stores and on our website.”
