In light of the drastic increase in diabetes in South Africa, here are 10 ways to reduce your risk of developing type-2 diabetes

According to the World Health Organisation, the number of people with diabetes rose nearly 300 percent between 1980 and 2014.

In South Africa, 4.5 million people have developed diabetes. These new figures, released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), shows that South Africa is now among the top 10 countries showing an absolute increase in diabetes prevalence.

While type-1 diabetes is genetic, type-2 diabetes is known to be an avoidable form of diabetes, as it is caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.

In honour of Diabetes Awareness Month (November) and World Diabetes Day (14 November), here are 10 ways to reduce your risk of developing type-2 diabetes:

  2. Work out regularly
  3. Avoid sugar-sweetened drinks
  4. Maintain a healthy body weight
  5. Quit smoking
  6. Drink water
  7. Avoid large portions
  8. Be more active and cut back on sedentary behaviour
  9. Increase your intake of vitamin D
  10. Avoid processed foods
