Why it’s a bad idea to miss a workout

Doing difficult things is, well, difficult. In order to continue to do them regularly, they need to become habits in your life, so that you are on ‘auto-pilot’ when you do them.

The tough thing about habits is that they are often broken far more easily than they are made.

So when you’ve got a habit going, the worst thing you can do is break the habit a few times in a row. This is especially true in strength training, because of all the difficult things you do on a regular basis, training to get stronger is possibly the most difficult.

You eventually get used to doing the training, and once you’re about a month into it, you can’t see your life without it. But if you miss a few sessions you’ll remember how easy it is to NOT strength train, and this makes you less likely to begin again.

You’ll also have a couple of really tough workouts when you do get going again, which may put you off trying to pick up the habit again. Missing workouts also breaks the progress that you’ve built up over however long you’ve been training, and forces you to repeat a workout or two, so you can ‘remember’ what you are involved with before trying to increase the weights again.

On a more emotional note, missing workouts means missed opportunities to de-stress through training, which is one of its greatest benefits.

Don’t miss a workout, and if you do, try to make it only one or two. Otherwise your habit is going nowhere, and neither is your progress.
