Pearl Thusi is calling out social media users who slammed Unathi for joking – declaring that Xhosas were tired of carrying the nation

The joke had been doing the rounds ever since Siya Kolisi, who is Xhosa, led the Springboks to victory at the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Unathi’s fellow Idols SA judge Somizi also caused a stir when he shared a letter from ‘The Xhosa Nation’ that read: “We as the Xhosa people would like to state that we are tired of carrying this country on our backs.”

Somizi’s followers found his post hilarious and couldn’t wait to bump into the stat after he promised to give the first Xhosa person he bumps into R1 000.

Sadly, when Unathi made the joke on live TV it was not so well received

“On behalf of the Xhosa people, we are tired of holding up the nation,” she teased while congratulating Idols SA contestant Luyolo Yiba on his performance.

Scores of social media users slammed Unathi’s comments, with some accusing her of tribalism.

A few tweeps even went as far as saying that she was dividing the nation.

Unathi apologised for her remarks

“It saddens me that I have broken so many hearts with what I said tonight. What I saw was a beautiful joke being passed around this past week by so many South Africans not necessarily Xhosa and wanted to share,” she said on Instagram.

Some Twitter users rejected her apology. One person who came to Unathi’s defence was Pearl.

“The hypocrisy on this platform knows no bounds. #Unathi,” she tweeted.

Pearl added in a separate tweet: “Also, if you don’t like someone’s opinion, why are you on their timeline? Why continue to consume their content on any platform. Just go keep it moving and protect your spirit then.”
