Veteran actor Patrick Shai sustained injuries to his body after he was struck by rubber bullets when police allegedly opened fire during protests over electricity cuts in Dobsonville, Soweto
Protests erupted across the community on Monday morning and Patrick had apparently tried to intervene between protestors and police when things took a downward turn.
The former Generations and Zone 14 actor told Channel24 that he was trying calm the situation down when police got “trigger happy”.
“I was trying to mediate between cops and residents.”
Patrick was rushed to hospital where he has been treated for his injuries
“I’ve got an open wound on my leg. They’re putting in a drip now,” he added.
He also had to undergo X-rays to determine if there was any damage to his bones.
“When we say that there is no need for violence, we are also saying that to police,” Patrick added.
SAPS spokesperson Mathapelo Peters confirmed to the publication that police had been called to the scene and had used rubber bullets “to disperse a group of about 200 protesters”. Police also alleged that protestors began throwing objects at them.
