The month is November 2019: and front-tooth gaps are the coolest thing on South African Twitter

Nobody could have predicted this trend and if anybody can take credit for making it happen it’s Anele Mdoda.

Plenty of celebrities around the world have tooth gaps. From Elton John and the late Robin Williams to Georgia May and Jane Birkin, plenty of Hollywood’s biggest names have sported gaps in their pearly whites, but we can wager that nobody is more famous for their gap than our very own Anele Mdoda.

Nobody has made the word diastema (definition: A gap between one’s teeth) more popular than the 947 presenter who has flaunted the space between her front teeth for the duration of her career in the limelight.

While this might be the cause of insecurity for many people, Anele rolls with the punches

By being able to laugh at herself, she disarms many insults that some people might try to use to bully her.

And her confidence in her smile has emboldened other South Africans to embrace their own gaps.

A number of tweeps joined forces to send pictures of their spacious smiles in a bid to be crowned as the ultimate ambassador of the Tooth Gap ™:

… but not long after it looked as if she had met her match. She replied to one tweep and handed over the crown when she said:

Do you know anybody who could beat Anele’s tooth gap?
