Set in the 1960s, the story revolves around Bumpy Johnson, played by Forest himself, a middle-aged black man who returns to his childhood neighbourhood after spending a decade in jail. Upon his return he finds that the streets he’s known since he was a child are now controlled by the Italian Mafia. In a bid to restore order and regain control, he takes on the mobs with all the toughness of a Harlem-born city slicker.

The story is based on true events during the baby-boom era.

Forest spoke to 702’s Bongani Bingwa on why he chose the role

“The series was unique because they came to me with an idea to do a show about Bumpy Johnson and they wanted to know if I would be willing to develop the story with them. We went out and got writers who developed the story.”

But Bumpy wasn’t just a gangster who used whatever means he could to run the streets of his old neighbourhood. He was a caring, community-driven character who did his best to give back to those who needed it the most.

Forest explained his values when he added, “Even though Bumpy Johnson is a gangster he has a Robin Hood quality inside his community.”

Forest Whitaker will be in Johannesburg for a meet-and-greet session with the media on Friday evening where he will also be sharing more crucial teasers about the new show which is currently available for streaming on Showmax.
