Watching the World Cup at a tavern

When South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 2007, Siya watched the final at a tavern in Zwide, as the teenager’s family did not own a TV.

Twelve years later that same tavern would come alive with scores of screaming fans cheering Siya on during the Springbok’s final against England.

“I was actually watching it in the tavern because I didn’t have a TV at home.” @Springboks captain Siya Kolisi was asked where he was when South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 2007…#RWC2019 #StrongerTogether pic.twitter.com/FE5MZuF5GI

First black Springbok captain

In 2018, Siya Kolisi became the first black person to captain the Springboks in over a century. Before Siya was named captain, former Springbok player Bryan Habana gave him a big vote of confidence.

“I definitely believe there is enough leadership ability within Siya’s skillset for him to become a future Springbok captain. I got to know Siya when I joined the Stormers from the Bulls in 2010. At the time, he was a youngster and went on to make his Super Rugby debut in 2012.

“Fast forward to 2018 and I was so proud to see him earn his 100th Super Rugby cap. As we saw this past weekend against the Bulls, Siya is not only inspirational to the Newlands faithful but to many a youngster of any colour in South Africa,” Brian told Sport24 in May 2018.

A few weeks later, Siya was unveiled as the Boks’ new captain.
