Laying the right foundation

Problem: If your foundation seems to slide off your skin even before you’ve managed to finish applying your eye shadow, you’re not alone. Priming your skin is the obvious solution, but layering on an additional product doesn’t always seem that appealing.

Solution: In summer, multi-purpose products are a better idea than ever. Opt for a mattifying SPF that controls oil production – and by default perspiration, to a lesser extent.

Products to try: SVR Sun Secure Blur SPF50+, R250 has a mousse consistency and feels just like a traditional primer. Great to use under fuller coverage make-up application as anything you apply over it stays put. Visit their website or find it from selected Clicks stores or medical practitioners.

The actual foundation

Problem: Foundation that shifts, breaks up, and melts away in patches.

Solution: Counter-intuitively, the solution to shifty foundation isn’t a better, more full-coverage foundation – it’s a lighter one. Your warmer body temperature (if you’re that way inclined) will cause some inconsistency in your foundation no matter how much you fight it, and the harder you try to patch it up, the worse it will end up looking.

Opt for an oil free foundation that offers medium-cover and long-wear. Along with consistent, even coverage comes consistent, even fade. Supplement with a heavy-duty concealer only in the areas you need it most.

Products to try: L’Oreal Infallible 24HR Foundation, R260 (major pharmacies and department stores) and Estee Lauder Double Wear Concealer, R445 (department stores).

Set in stone

Problem: Nothing quite stays where you applied it

Solution: I used to think setting sprays were overrated gimmicks until I tried a few different ones and realized that not all sprays are created equal. Some take away the ‘just made up’ look I personally despise, and others contain hairspray-like ingredients (that’s a very oversimplified explanation, of course) to keep everything in place.

Products to try: My all-time favourite setting spray is MAC Fix+ Spray, R355 (MAC counters countrywide or online) – I don’t think it’s the best setting spray in terms of making your make-up last longer, but I love how my skin and makeup feels and looks when I use this. For long-wear, try Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray, R495 here.
