When we talk about diet and exercise, we often focus on the eating (the right foods in the right quantities) and training (what kind and how often) to make our bodies lose the extra kilos. But what about once both of those are taken care of? Is there something else we can do to help the weight loss along a little?

Well, yes, there is. And it’ll make your house a nicer place to be, too.

NEAT is an acronym for non-exercise activity thermogenesis, and it takes into account all of the activity you do that is NOT exercise (not gym or jogging or whatever you do). So things like walking up a flight of stairs, or playing with your dog are counted, because although they burn fewer calories than your time in the gym, they burn more than when you sit on the couch.

One of the best things you can do to increase your NEAT score is taking care of your house and garden. You burn some calories, keep your body moving, AND get a clean space to exist in. Good deal!

So which household chores are the highest NEAT scorers?

Well, mowing the lawn, vacuuming, washing the car, garden work, and stripping and washing your bedding are the best ones. But anything that keeps the body mobile is a goodie.

Keep in mind that “weight loss and living a healthy lifestyle” is a full-time job. This is a great way to motivate you to do things that usually wouldn’t be so appealing. But if spending a morning in the garden helps you burn some calories, then why not do it? It benefits you in two ways now.
