Summer in South Africa is a special time. School holidays, braais, the festive season, sandy beaches and of course – sunshine

South Africans are blessed with an amazing climate, and summer is the perfect time to move your living space outdoors, says Estelle Nagel, Gumtree South Africa’s Marketing Manager.

Perhaps the only thing we love more than summer is a bargain

Gumtree South Africa is your number one destination for buying pre-owned and new braais and bomas, plants and trees, cobblestones, ornaments and garden furniture. Whether you are looking for top brands like Jetmaster or Weber at 50% off the retail price, or buying a traditional homemade half-drum from R150, they’ve got it all.

Here are some awesome ideas – using outdoor items available on Gumtree – for adding some style and flair to your outdoor living area this summer:

1. Build a deck using paving stones

You don’t need to be a DIY guru to create an outdoor floor. All you need to do is prepare the ground properly to prevent the stones from moving out of place. Simply mark out the area with a string and drive vertical stakes into the ground, 10 cm into the soil and spaced one metre apart. Dig out 8-10 centimetres of soil with a slight slope to allow for drainage.

Fill the hole with landscape fabric, pack with gravel and stone dust and tamp down with a mallet. Lay the bricks in your desired pattern and spread and sweep stone dust over the bricks. Use water to harden the sand and you’ve got your deck!

2. Bring out your couch

Cane or pallet furniture can be weather-proofed and are extremely affordable – and of course look great in the garden. Add soft touches by adding a geometric pouf, hurricane lanterns and soft cushions. A swing chair adds the perfect spot to relax with a good book.

3. Add a little sleeper wood

Re-purposed sleeper wood, crates and a few antique milk cans filled with lavender plants will transport you instantly to Provence or the secret gardens hidden in Paris.

It’s a great way of introducing color into your garden while remaining water wise. The idea of this look is to appear rustic – so feel free to liberally add baskets, crates, old garden chairs and bottles.
