Kelly Khumalo has come out strongly to set the record straight on the circumstances surrounding her U-turn from the Lebo Mathosa role
Earlier this month it was reported that Kelly was earmarked to play the iconic singer in an upcoming biopic about her life. She was set to star alongside actress Bahumi Madisakwane, who would play the younger version of Lebo.
However, City Press reported two weeks ago that Kelly had apparently pulled out due disputes about money. Just days after those reports, Viacom confirmed that Bahumi and KB Motsilanyane would be playing the role.
During an interview with City Press, Kelly finally addressed the swirling speculation around the debacle.
“I know my self-worth. I am at a point in my life where I have recognised the importance of representing myself the best way I can,” she said.
She also claimed on Metro FM late last week that working conditions on set made it difficult to give of her best
Kelly’s new brand manager, Legend Manqele echoed these sentiments when speaking to City Press.
“Kelly felt that working under these conditions was limiting her ability to honour the talented icon that was Lebo Mathosa and execute a sound performance,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bahumi described being a part of the biopic as an “honour”.

Words cannot describe.. But in their best effort, telling the story I had both dreamed and feared of telling my whole life, has been one of the most humbling experiences and gifts thus far. God Thank You. You are Faithful. May You forever be glorified. To each person who has played a role in helping me, guiding me, and pushing me throughout this process, you truly are a blessing. From my friends and my family, to the amazing crew (the greatest appreciation to the choreographers @erasmusmegan and Sis Sbongile for being extreme professionals and encouraging Aunts to me all at the same time), I would not have enjoyed this process with all the challenges it came with if God didn’t choose all of you to walk this with me. Here’s to a beautiful production, a beautiful story, and an extraordinary person I have been trusted to evoke – may her soul rest in everlasting peace. 🙏🏽 (Clips from the first week of dance rehearsals )
