World Pasta Day was first celebrated in 1995 when 40 pasta manufacturers from around the globe took part in the first ever World Pasta Congress. The rest, is history.

Pasta is typically made from an unleavened dough of durum wheat flour (semolina) mixed with water or eggs, and formed into sheets or various shapes, then cooked by boiling or baking. It became an important part of peoples’ diets in the 14th and 15th centuries due to the fact that it could be dried and stored for long periods of time.

America’s National Pasta Association says that there are over 600 different shapes of pasta!

Some of the more recognisable types of pasta include lasagne, spaghetti, tagliatelle, rigatoni, macaroni, penne, ravioli, linguine, and tortellini. The less familiar types include paccheri, agnolotti, manicotti, farfalle, campanelle, and pizzoccheri amongst others!

According to Wikipedia, when cooked, plain pasta is composed of 62% water, 31% carbohydrates (26% starch), 6% protein, and 1% fat. A 100 gram portion of unenriched cooked pasta provides 160 Calories and a moderate level of manganese, but few other micronutrients.
