Itumeleng Khune found himself at the top of the trending lists this weekend after being accused of dating an 18-year-old from Durban

Is there anybody that Mzansi loves gossiping about as much as Itu Khune? The Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper has made more headlines for his private life than he has for his illustrious record as a football professional over the years.

His name found its way into the tabloids for the umpteenth time after he was romantically linked with a woman who is currently preparing for her matric exams.

Not many of us knew 18-year-old Tshegofatso Mbalenhle before this weekend but all that changed when she was tagged by her ex-boyfriend who accused her of cheating on him. This in itself wouldn’t have raised too many eyebrows but the people involved in this story made it a topic of national interest.

Firstly, the accuser was DJ Tira’s son, Chase Khathi; but perhaps more importantly, he was accusing Tshego of cheating on him with Itumeleng Khune: and he had receipts!

Just in case you can’t see the visuals in that screenshot above, Tweeps were able to get a video snippet in which you can clearly see Tshegofatso with an older, bearded man. There also happens to be a “Khune – 16” framed jersey in the background.

It didn’t take long for the clip and the screenshots to go viral and as a result, Khune’s name was trending as tweeps debated the appropriateness of a 32-year-old man dating a woman who just turned 18

As ever, the timeline was divided in its opinions. There were those who condemned the Chiefs legend’s actions:

However, there were a number of Khune fans who were keen to defend their “captain” not only because Tshego is “legal” (16 is the age at which South African teenagers can give legal consent for sex) but because many of his critics were notably silent when Zodwa Wabantu (who is said to be 34) paraded her new 18-year-old boyfriend.

Just when we thought the debate would go on forever, we were presented with a plot twist when Khune himself “entered the chat” and shared a tweet. The goalkeeper shared a picture of his current girlfriend Sphelele Makhunga and dubbed her the “love of his life”.

Many believed that this was his way of denying any involvement with 18-year-old Tshego:

This tweet created more confusion than clarity on the social media streets but let’s just say that not everybody believed that Sphelele is the only woman in Itu’s life:
