With winterâ??s chilly fingers beginning to tap on our shoulders, gearing up for the icy season is a must! I absolutely love natural remedies, so I thought Iâ??d share a few of what I think are the best all-natural options for tackling our typical winter ailments.
Is that scratchy winter throat bothering you in the mornings? Or is cracked, dry skin making winterâ??s presence painfully obvious? Here are a few great natural remedies to try, courtesy of some essential oils â?? and your kitchen cupboard!
1. Natural vapour rub
Safe for all ages, this is a wonderful relief for tight chests and blocked noses.
In a small pan on low heat, melt together five tablespoons of coconut oil and one tablespoon of evening primrose oil. Add two tablespoons of beeswax, or do as I did and substitute the beeswax with three tablespoons Bee Natural healing balm from Dis-Chem. Stir it in, then follow up with eight to 10 drops of tea tree essential oil and 15 to 20 drops of rosemary essential oil.
Pour into a small glass jar and allow to cool in the fridge. When itâ??s time for bed, rub the mixture into your feet (far more quickly absorbed than via your chest!) and put socks on afterwards.
2. Natural ingredients for headache relief
This is a simple one â?? or two for that matter. Simply rub lavender essential oil into your temples, your brows, your jaw line, and other areas of tension for quick relief. Iâ??ve also heard that halving a lime and rubbing it gently over your forehead and temples can work wonders for headaches too, but I havenâ??t tried this one myself.
If you’ve heard that other oils work better, like wintergreen and clove, these are not to be used without prescription from a herbalist, as they are volatile herbs.
3. Nasal irrigation
What youâ??re doing here is essentially creating a bidet for your nose. Ewww, right? Well, it is surprisingly easy and harmless, and most importantly â?? effective! This is reported to be a wonder for those that battle with sinus congestion in particular.
If youâ??re not prepared to buy a nasal irrigation bottle (it is a plastic squeezy bottle with a thin spout), you simply need to get your hands on a small teapot with a spout.
Wash your hands thoroughly, then prepare a solution of 4,5ml Himalayan rock salt and 500ml filtered warm water. This ratio most accurately matches your bodyâ??s natural saline levels for the gentlest cleanse. To test the solution, swill it around your mouth â?? if itâ??s soothing, it should be just right, but if you wince at the saltiness, you need to water it down a bit. Lean your head over the sink with your head down, then gently pour the solution into the top nostril. It will trickle out of the bottom nostril and sometimes out of your mouth as well. Blow your nose gently, then repeat with the other nostril.
4. Simple tummy bug solution
Whether itâ??s a viral infection, food poisoning or a bad tummy ache, try this easy concoction. Mix together equal parts of honey, white vinegar and water (around 50ml each) and drink.
5. Cough and sore throat medicine
Honey is the star of the show here, with unanimous reports of it offering instant relief for coughs and sore throats. Whilst a tablespoon of simple raw honey, swallowed slowly, is effective, I like the extra powerful version of combining a tablespoon of honey with a teaspoon of coconut oil and a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon.
