Mzansi has been in celebratory mode ever since it was announced on Thursday that 1Magic telenovela The River bagged its first Emmy nomination
The show clinched a nod in the Best Telenovela category and will go up against productions from Argentina, Colombia and Portugal.
M-Net CEO Nkateko Mabaso congratulated the show’s cast and producers in a statement.
“1Magic would like to thank everyone involved in the success of the show, he said.
The show’s creator Phathu Makwarela told Eyewitness News that they were honoured by the recognition.
“Give us a few days and we’ll be beyond thrilled. For now, I think it’s still a shock and we’re still processing it. We’re all grateful for the Emmys to see us and award this nomination.”
The River which was launched last year features a star-studded cast that includes Linda Mtoba, Hlomla Dandala, Sindi Dlathu, Warren Masemola, and Presley Chweneyagae.
The Emmy Awards will take place at the Hilton Hotel in New York City on 25 November.
In March the gripping telenovela did a clean sweep at the SAFTSs where it bagged 11 awards, including best telenovela, best supporting actor, best actor and best actress
The show also had tongues wagging in February when one of its main cast members, Moshidi Motshegwa announced that she would not be part of season two.
Moshidi played the hugely popular character, Malefu who had been a fan favourite since the launch of the show.
At the time Moshidi claimed that her contract had been cancelled after an alleged disagreement with a fellow cast member.
She claimed that she had signed a renewal for season two, but had allegedly been called in a few weeks later by producers and was informed that scriptwriters “were struggling” with Malefu’s storyline.
