There’s Astoria in New York, Jamestown in Accra, Dogpatch in San Francisco, Downtown Miami, and Old Xuhui, Shanghai. And then there’s Melville, Johannesburg…

Yes, this thriving suburb in Johannesburg, South Africa, has been listed as one of the world’s coolest neighbourhoods according to the editors of Time Out. And it’s not just their opinion. Over 27 000 people around the world were asked to rate their favourite spots, and the eclectic mix of food, art, antiques, and clubs in Melville put the suburb at number 48 on the list.

Melville was established in 1896 and is one of the oldest suburbs in the city. Wits University is on its left, while the University of Johannesburg is to its right.

If you’ve ever been to Melville, you’ll know about the area’s fantastic architecture. From old Victorian homes to modern steel and glass structures like the ’27 Boxes’ shopping mall which was built out of shipping containers. The architecture reflects the diversity of the people that flock to the area from international tourists to happy SA locals.

What does the Time Out team have to say about Melville?

They loved the smashed avocado sandwich at The Whippet, and raved about the unconventional cocktails at the Anti-Social Social Club. The editors recommended the exquisite view of Johannesburg from the upstairs gallery at the Bamboo Lifestyle Centre, and the Convoy store which features premier SA clothing designers.

“The Changing City” Barcelona 2004-2019. Barcelona’s “Flatiron”, casa de Antònia Serra i Mas in Poblenou by Ramón Puig i Garialt, was built in 1926 and underwent renovation in 2011. For the last 15 years I have been documenting the transformation of Barcelona’s Poble Nou and the urban regeneration prompted by the development of the [email protected] technological district. During this time I have built a comprehensive portfolio of iconic images of many the projects that were built afterwards. A long term project which I began to shoot on film as I later moved onto digital and continues to the day.#barcelonagram #architecture #arquitecturaydiseño #architecturephotography #modernistarchitecture #modernist #barcelona #poblenou #barcelonapoblenou #urbanphotography #urbanlandscape #catalunya #barcelona_world #barcelonaphotographer #iñigobujedoaguirre #ciutatdebarcelona #spain #catalunya #nikon #nikonistas
