Here are ways to transform your balcony into a private sanctuary where you can comfortably entertain or simply relax in the spring sunshine

If your apartment is small, making the most of your balcony only makes sense. But, even if you have plenty of space indoors, it’s lovely to have an outdoor space where you can soak up the spring sunshine, dine outdoors and enjoy the stress-busting benefits of gardening.

One of the reasons that many people don’t use their balcony is because it doesn’t feel like a private space.

If that is something that has put you off using your outdoor space, start by boosting your balcony privacy:

  • Add privacy screens – Attach wooden lattice or reed fencing to the balcony rails with cable ties and consider encouraging a creeping plant, like jasmine, to climb up the screens.
  • Increase overhead privacy – Install an awning or a large sun umbrella on your balcony.
  • Keep seating low – Add low-profile outdoor seating so, once seated, you and your guests will be barely visible above the balcony rails.
  • Go green – Use potted flowers and herbs to beautify the space, and taller plants to help increase your privacy.
