Dealing with awkward situations…

When you’re on a diet – if you’re doing it properly – you’re eventually going to ‘upset’ someone.

I use the air-quotes on upset because the upset isn’t real. People will often act offended if you say ‘No thanks’ to the donut they offer you, or if you only order coffee at a lunch date where everyone else is indulging in large slices of cake.

But the truth is, in this situation, the people who act offended are channelling one of two underlying feelings. The first is jealousy at your commitment to a thing they wish they could be committed to; and the second is control – when they can’t tell you what to eat, they feel like you are suddenly in control of yourself more than they feel comfortable with.

These are both problems, but not your problems. These other people – who won’t remember their upset over your diet tomorrow – need to deal with their own issues, and can be left alone to do so without your friendship (if you so desire).

What I’ve found over time is that people like this are not a positive force for progress in any area of life, because they are negative about their own lack of drive, and don’t desire success for anyone else, either. Consider whether their influence in your life is really significant or not, and learn to keep the ‘negative Nancys’ at a distance.

If you find yourself in these awkward situations, and you don’t know what to do, stick to the diet, and don’t sweat the social stuff. The people involved are very seldom worth the energy.
