Calorie-counting. It’s BORING. It’s TOUGH. It takes TIME. It’s INCONVENIENT. It’s MISERABLE.

… it WORKS if your goal is weight loss. It’s the only thing that works.

Calorie-counting is an effective concept in weight loss for the same reason that the curriculum for mathematics works the way it does – start with your current level of knowledge, and learn a little more that builds on the previous material.

With dieting, this process is ‘start with how many calories you currently eat, subtract a few hundred, and eat that many until your weight loss slows, and drop a few hundred more’. Eventually you’re where you wanted to be.

So why not just drop right down and lose weight faster?

Well, for the same reason we don’t teach people calculus in Grade One of their school career – the systems that govern the process are sensitive. Too few calories will mean NO WEIGHT LOSS, just like utter confusion equals no learning.

You need to count calories, at least at the beginning, so you can get a feeling for how much to eat, and then take it from there. You can make sure you keep progressing by weighing yourself every day, and if ten days passes with no positive change in the scale, then drop some calories.

Easy right?
