Gratitude is situated in the recently built Flamingo mall, which is down the road from the Greenstone Mall in Modderfontein. We sat in a sunny spot that overlooks the park and lake. It was a clear day, so we could see out for miles. We started our Sunday afternoon off with cocktails and then took a look at the menu.

We decided to start off with the prawn taco which we shared. There were three tempura prawns so we each had our own and shared the third. It was tough, but sometimes relationships are about sharing. I love coleslaw and this one didn’t disappoint. Every bite was delicious and we wanted to order more but knew we still had to get through mains and dessert.

My boyfriend had the seafood pasta and said it was ” the best I’ve ever tasted”. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that this is one of the most popular items on the menu. The seafood mix included calamari tubes, prawns and muscles (and there was more than enough) in a creamy sauce.

I went with the Asian-inspired fish and chips with a wasabi tartar sauce. I love wasabi anything and finished it all by dipping the fish and sweet potato chips in the sauce. The batter around the fish was light and crispy. I took some fish to go and had it with a salad for lunch the next day. The fish still tasted great and one of my colleagues even remarked how delicious my lunch looked.

We were stuffed but knew we had to try the dessert. My boyfriend’s current favourite dessert is mille-feuille, so we knew we had to try it out. It arrived and we immediately dug in. The crunchy biscuit balanced the sweetness of the creamy filling. And the ice cream added another element of sweetness. It was just the right amount for two people. We had eaten well but weren’t horribly full, which is sometimes difficult to achieve. We were happy and full and it was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Gratitude does cater to private events, which means you could have your next birthday party or special occasion at the venue. They are also able to cater to your tastes if requested. The menu is mainly seafood but does also offer chicken, red meat and tapas. They have a full bar and a great cocktail menu (virgin and regular). The wine list perfectly complements its seafood offering.

As always, the final test of any good restaurant is would I spend my own money? Gratitude is the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion. The prices are a bit more than your average restaurant, but this isn’t an average restaurant. The portions are big and the food delicious. The next time I’m celebrating something special, I’ll definitely try out Gratitude again.
