Summer is on the way, and it’s important that you know how to protect your skin and eyes from the sun
When it comes to preventing skin cancer, Dr Ralf Hartmann, a German dermatologist, says using sun protection is important when spending time outdoors and avoid getting sunburnt.
He says that people with fair skin, red and blonde hair are more sensitive to the sun and have a higher risk of developing skin cancer than people with darker skin.
While many people look out for dark moles – which could possibly be dangerous melanomas – Dr Hartmann says skin cancer can also present as small spots that don’t heal. If you notice a pimple-like spot that doesn’t heal within two to four weeks, you should see a doctor or dermatologist.
Dr Hartmann recommends seeing a dermatologist every two years for a skin check and every year if you have fair skin and a higher risk of skin cancer.
It’s not only your skin that needs protection; your eyes need protection from the harsh African sun too.
German optician Leonard Arndt says it’s important to look for sunglasses with good sized lenses, to protect against glare and ultraviolet (UV) light.
