Whether you have a sprawling garden or a petite patio, adding a flowering hanging basket or two is a great way to add colour to an outdoor space

You can hang baskets from a pergola to add interest, or use them to soften the look of a boundary wall by fixing hooks to the wall. What’s more, you don’t need a big garden to enjoy the odd hanging basket or two.

If you love the idea of flowering hanging baskets that bloom throughout spring and summer, then this tutorial is for you.

What you need:

  • A hanging basket
  • Compost
  • Potting soil
  • Drainage stones
  • A variety of flowering plants
  • Fertiliser pellets

The tutorial

In the following video, Katherine Crouch, BBC Gardener of The Decade, shows us how to plant a flowering hanging basket.
