You want to make sure pesky insects won’t damage your clothes in storage, but who loves the smell of traditional naphthalene mothballs? Here are some earth- (and nose) friendly alternatives that work even better…
Strongly scented woods
Your best bet to ward off pests is packing in some chunks of scented woods. Camphor and cedar both remain favourites, and they’ve been proven to be effective, too. This is actually why many older storage chests for linen and clothing are made of these woods.
There’s a bunch (pun intended) of herbs that also have bug-repelling properties.
Layer some dried lavender, rosemary, mint, thyme, cloves, lemon or eucalyptus among your clothes (or use the essential oils) to make sure no pesky moths get into the fabric.
Not only do these alternatives smell better, but they’re all-natural too. It’s a win-win!
