If you enjoy boutique-style hotels with lots of style and character, in the heart of trendy urban shopping and eating areas, you’ll love BON 64 on Gordon in Durban’s Morningside.

Walking distance to some of Durban’s best restaurants

If you like an urban buzz and easy access to the pub and restaurant vibe, but still want a quiet room, away from traffic and loud music, we’ve found the ideal place to stay on your next trip to Durban.

Tucked away in quiet Gordon Road in Windermere (part of the suburb of Morningside in central Durban) is the quaint, yet trendy, BON Hotel.

The BON Hotel group has renovated an old character building – on a tree-lined street – with lead pane windows, wood floors and high ceilings giving the establishment lots of gracious style and character.

Industrial finishes and modern features in the cosy bar area and their PL8 restaurant are part of the old-meets-new décor and the rooms are spacious and all feature king-sized beds, air conditioning, LDC TVs with satellite.

I loved the double showers in the massive bathrooms – two people can shower at the same time (great if you’re in a romantic mood or just in a rush to get ready…).

Dinner at PL8 was great (generous portions and reasonable prices)

We had dinner downstairs at the hotel’s PL8 restaurant and were really pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food (and ultra-generous portion sizes) on offer in this unassuming and unpretentious venue.

A juicy steak cooked to perfection, grilled hake and salad and a huge portion of pasta Alfredo were our choices. Prices for both the food and drinks are really reasonable for this area and PL8 is a great choice for an early Friday night dinner even if you’re not a guest at the hotel (the kitchen closes at 9pm so get there by 8 to be safe). They also do pizza and healthy international cuisine.

Breakfast the next morning did not disappoint either: the Eggs Benedict is highly recommended by the whole family and they serve great coffee too.

And with rooms starting from about R1 000 for two guests, this is one of Morningside’s best kept-secrets.

Unbeatable location: close to the beach and with easy access to the airport
